Walk into any appliance shop and the energy appetite of a fridge is printed on the box before the price is. Software ships with no such label, and that is the gap we exist to close.
The cost is real, it is just invisible
Every instruction a processor retires costs energy. Every wasted allocation, every redundant re-render, every framework that ships three abstraction layers to do one job lands somewhere - as heat, as a cooling bill, as a phone that feels old after eighteen months.
Unpriced things get abused. We have spent fifteen years treating compute as free and shipping the bill to the user battery and the planet grid.
A grade is information, not shaming
When energy labels arrived on appliances, the worst-rated models simply stopped selling. The label did not punish anyone, it just made a hidden cost legible and let the market do the rest. We expect the same arc for software.
That last number is the whole point. Cycles, energy, bundle size - measured, not vibed.
